The Risk May Be in Your Hands
This painting was inspired by a moment during my GP placement that changed the way I thought about health. While learning about breast cancer risk factors, I was struck by the influence of excess body weight on postmenopausal breast cancer risk. If this surprised me as a medical student, how many patients might be equally unaware? It made me reflect on something easily overlooked in modern healthcare: the power of prevention.
Through acrylic on canvas, I wanted to bring together science, art and emotion. The nude female torso represents vulnerability and our relationship with the bodies we inhabit. The two sides of the painting tell contrasting stories. One draws on tissue associated with increased breast cancer risk, with dark markings suggesting cancerous change. The other takes inspiration from skeletal muscle, symbolising movement, strength and the protective potential of physical activity. Together, they illustrate the balance between risk and protection.
The open hands carry the painting’s central message: although we cannot control every factor influencing our health, some risks may be within our power to change. Recognising this is not about blame, but about knowledge, choice and empowerment. As a future doctor, I hope not only to treat disease, but to help people understand their health and feel empowered to improve it.
I hope this painting encourages viewers to reflect on the aspects of health that may be within our hands, while remembering the compassion needed for everything that is not.
