The contorted fingers in “Grappling with the Intangible” emoted feelings of pain and suffering when I saw the sculpture. I appreciate Kieran’s skill in accurately modelling the human hand. The cracking of the ring finger suggests pain and and fragility as well as literally emphasising the loss of use as a result of RA. To me the fact the artist modelled his own hand reflects his empathetic connection wth patients and how he is trying to understand the patient’s suffering – putting himself in their shoes. In the description Kieran considers not only on this individual disease but on the treatment of the disease as a whole and I like how he has taken the opportunity to expand on his concerns more generally.
I think this piece of art really captures how important keeping a healthy state of mind is to the health of an individual, in this case, the medium for doing so is music. As the piece states, the transcendence that can be acquired through being creative can elevate one and the importance of finding this transcendence is of great consequence to everyone.
