The way the doctor sees the patient and how the doctor sees themselves
I have drawn this to highlight the difference between the way the doctor sees the patient, and how the patient sees themselves. It is drawn as though looking through the eyes of the doctor, who sees the patient as nothing but a collection of organs, muscles and bones with no emotions. The mirror on the wall shows how the patient views herself. The lady in the mirror is crying, showing the patient seeing herself as having feelings, whereas the doctor misses these emotions when he looks at her.
Whole Person Care – Year One
I think this piece is really clever is it highlights how much a patient can sometimes conceal from their doctor.
I think this drawing is great because it emphasizes the differences in which clinicians view the patients and the way the patient can see themselves. The body is not just a machine made of individual working components, it is far more. It highlights the core principles of Whole Person Care.
I really like this piece of artwork, it reveals the fact that patients may often feel objectified by their doctor. A patient is a human being with emotions, but doctors often emotionally detach themselves from their patients. It is important to remember that patients do not only need a doctor who is technically skilled, but also someone that will listen to them, someone who is caring and someone that is able to show empathy. This would consequently lead to higher patient satisfaction, and better overall health outcomes. Therefore, the artwork brings up the question of what really makes a good doctor and the importance of whole person care.
This piece really caught my eye because it sends such a powerful message about how patients may not have their well-being and emotions taken into account during a consultation. Patients shouldn’t be treated as anatomical figures, but as human beings. By showing the patient crying it emphasises how much of an impact connecting with a patient is when discussing diagnoses and treatment plans. This encompasses the wide variety of skills in which a good doctor must posses.
For me this piece highlighted the importance of maintaining our sense of humanity in the healthcare field. It is a reminder that although a doctor’s primary role is to treat disease, we must not forget the importance of also treating the person.
This piece is interesting because it shows the perceptions of a doctor that has only seen the anatomical side of the patient, and shows that the patients emotional well-being is important to them at that moment in time and so the doctor should take into account the emotional well-being of the patient.
I thought this piece of artwork was particularly powerful. I became drawn to the complex anatomical structures drawn on the figure on the right that I have been learning about in great detail since I arrived at medical school as opposed to the faded drawing on the left. I feel this piece effectively demonstrates how easy it is for healthcare professionals to look beyond the patient’s identity and look straight at the physiological faults. Only when you look closely, can you see the patient crying symbolising how easy it is to miss what’s on the surface, including patients’ emotions.
