Taking

David Newhall

This piece is a representation of the birth of the unborn child from the mother. The emphasis strongly lies with symbolism, colour and shape rather than the accuracy of the image. The central focus is found around the foetus. The shape highlights its vulnerability whilst its colour shows its creation. Around the foetus an oppressive black hand spawns, encapsulating the unborn child. The hand represents the ‘Taking’ of the child. To contextualize, the mother’s body uses pastel blues to show its peace and safety. The calmness of the colour is diametrically opposed by the sinisterism and darkness of the hand. Finally, the borders use green to represent the outside world. However, the green is infused with blacks and purples, the composite colour of the hand, thus showing the dangers inherent in the world.
