A coat of NHS ethnicities
Our creative piece aims to show and celebrate the diverse nature of the NHS workforce. Using a lab coat, we express different cultural and ethical aspects of healthcare in the UK. We aim to use a wide range of materials which reflects the range of diversity within the NHS workforce, including fabric, oil pastels and yarn, particularly highlighting the importance of the interwoven nature of an multidisciplinary team. This creative methodology also represents our aspirations around flattening hierarchies.
We drew on a plethora of online resources to gather, analytically evaluate and present statistics coupled with other information that helped mould our artworks and led to our final form.
Working on the lab coat in close collaboration, we researched predominant NHS ethnic diversities and selected specific ethnic backgrounds to represent. We then individually researched statistics and data to go along with complex art patterns (hand drawn/created by each member) to represent that particular ethnicity through the uniquely decorated sections.

I really liked this creative piece as I appreciate how it highlights the diversity of the NHS. The different materials and textures of the lab coat reflect the variety of people from different ethnicities with different jobs within the NHS to come together and ensure the NHS runs as smoothly as possible. The beauty of the range of vibrant colours together emphasises the importance of ethnicities working together.
I really like this piece! I think with a lot of what going on in the world, we can forget the stories and sometimes pains people hold. Even whilst being a doctor daily and doing what you can to help others, you will sometimes carry the pain of your homeland or the struggles of feeling out of place but this piece perfectly shows how we can all work together to embrace different cultures and ethnic origins coming together to work well together.
