When Conventional Drugs Fail Try Placebo
David Reilly described the idea of the mind-body link, saying that a patient’s treatment, physiology, feelings and experiences are inextricably linked, and all have an impact on the patient’s response to illness. This link is so strong that in a drug trial, patients with Parkinson’s disease who took a placebo produced comparable amounts of dopamine in their brains to patients taking a specific drug, suggesting that therapeutically, psychological aspects are just as important as conventional biomedical approaches in treating some diseases.
In my creative piece, I tried to explore the self-healing properties of a positive attitude by portraying the brain as a drug, and extended this idea further by imagining how this drug would be marketed by a pharmaceutical company.
I found the process quite relaxing, and it was refreshing to have the opportunity to think in a more abstract way, rather than simply learning factual information as in other elements of the course.
Whole Person Care – Year One
I like both the simplicity of your picture, and the irony in your slogan. Striking and effective. I think you’ve done a really good job of expressing the complexities and power of the human brain, as well as addressing the notion that health care is not necessarily always given by simply prescribing drugs.
Really eye-catching message! I like how it’s simple but straight to the point and effective.
