Kidney Flower
What inspired me to produce this painting is the patient’s undying
strength and perseverance in continuing life normally, despite
debilitating circumstances. This can be seen as the sun shining over a
diseased kidney, depicted as a flower.

According to the patient, no matter how unfair life seems to you,
it is you who determines the course of your life. Challenges in life make you
appreciate what you have and then you begin to see the world as a
‘glass half-full’ – and this is what I admire most in the patient.
G.P. Attachment
Mysterious and powerfully seductive, this image taps into my memory of many patients who continue to be enchanted by life, however full of pain and hardship…they are indeed an inspiration to us all.
A very evocative work, most certainly reminds me of a few patients I visited on GP placement who had astonishing resilience in the face of chronic illness. One can only imagine what such illnesses must be like to live with.
I was initially drawn to this piece of artwork because of the pretty flowers and the sun shining over it, as this does not feel like a depiction of illness. For me this painting shows that my perception of how patients with chronic illness feel can be wrong. Patients are often incredibly resilient and positive despite the burden of illness.
