Lost Identity

Megan Cocker

During a healthcare placement, I visited a woman who discussed the experience of her role as a carer. This woman was, to me, inspirational in the way she had adapted to devoting a great deal of her time to the daily needs of, first, her mother in law and then her own mother, whilst also fully supporting her child through a huge transition. Together, we spoke of how she had heavily relied on her faith and her community to uphold a strong and positive mindset. Despite this, the difficulties of devoting such a huge amount of time to another individual resulted in her sacrificing her own hobbies and self-care. Whilst reflecting on this encounter, I considered the consequences for carers who do not have such a support system in place.

My creative piece is an acrylic painting of an individual who is representative of a carer and symbolic of how one can begin to lose one’s own identity as they devote significant time to bettering another’s quality of life:
The lack of a mouth and eyes within an expressionless and anonymous face – this loss of defining features is intended to represent a carer relinquishing the things unique to them as a person, in order to provide care.
Also, the slumped posture and holding the head in the hands is an embodied interpretation of carrying the weight of others.

For any person in the position of carer, I hope this piece of work highlights the importance of self-care and the seemingly insignificant things, which form the foundations of an individual’s personality.
