Termination
The patient presented to the G.P. with lower abdominal pain following a termination. It turned out her ex-partner had forced her to have this procedure (when she wanted to keep the baby). He had been outside her house threatening her and had followed her to the hospital to make sure she had gone through with the termination. She was mourning the loss of the baby and her relationship with her ex-partner.
Whole Person Care, Year One, 2010
This piece very simplistically captures the pain of a mother losing her child. It can be seen that very simple art skills were used as the emotion behind the piece over powers the entire drawing. I felt emotionally moved as the relationship between a mother and her child is extremely special and just giving up a child without one’s own will can be extremely daunting. Truly, as emotional piece.
This is a very striking picture. I believe that the simple lines and colours represent the child-like vulnerability of this woman at the hands of her partner and her powerlessness to overcome her overwhelming sense of grieving. The woman’s isolation comes through very clearly in this picture, as both the foetus and her partner are depicted as completely separate entities. The fact that her partner is drawn as a shadow highlights the fact that he has cast a dark cloud over her life and in making him faceless the artist has succeeded in making him seem more ominous and foreboding. This is a multifaceted picture which has a profound impact on those who see it.
