My Real Image
From the play ‘Cancer Tales’ and the words of Claire I was struck by her fear for the people she loved. She was scared that she would never get to see them again and she knew that they would miss her. This made me think about the importance of friends and family throughout the whole experience of a person’s illness – they are always on the patient’s mind.
I have taken the diagnostic tool of a scan of the mid-sagittal plane and imbued it with the emotions that Claire felt – ‘constant fear for my children, my husband and my friends’. These people take the place of the Gyra of the brain. Each one is frightened for the patient they love and is curled up into a foetal position to protect themselves from the fear and anguish, trying to regain a sense of calm or safety.
This is a really good portrayal of what parts of the patient story that pure clinical medicine can miss. I understood what was trying to be said by just looking at the painting. Really impressive!
A clever concept that is beautifully captured in this piece of artwork.
A great piece of artwork which encapsulates the importance of seeing beyond the patient’s disease process.
I found this piece of artwork extremely poignant. It depicts the importance of treating patients holistically.
This is a brilliant piece of artwork which I found incredibly striking. It really shows the importance of treating the patient as a whole not just an illness and symptoms.
This is one of my favourite pieces. I love the way how at first glance it looks like a regular MRI image but when examined closely more can be seen. I think this is an excellent reflection of how in a clinical scenario we need to delve a little deeper and look further than what is superficial.
This is a great piece. Really hits at how doctors can sometimes overlook the whole mental side of a patient’s health.
A brilliant piece of work. The idea behind it is very clever and original. It shows the importance of treating patients as individuals and not mere illnesses. Doctors should be aware of the impact a diagnosis can have on a patient’s mental well-being and that of his/her family members.
I loved how this artwork highlights the contest of the scientific view of the brain compared with a much more personal view of the mind. As a doctor you must be able to see both the psychological workings of the brain and interpret the medical images showing more visible problems!
