The Aching Soul
Developing the idea of referred pain in Anatomy, this mixed medium work reveals the dual nature of a healer’s persona, where their spectrum of pain extends beyond the physical realm.
Using vibrant colours on a monochrome photograph, the hidden scars a doctor faces through emotional trauma and physical exhaustion are brought to life. The blank expression juxtaposes how a doctor holds these emotional scars in silence, hidden beneath the façade of strength for their patients. The suggestion of various physical injuries signifies healthcare workers’ pain is ‘referred’ out and takes the form of many physical symptoms.
This creative piece transcends the conventional boundaries of pain for a doctor from an anatomical perspective, exhibiting how despite being open to the world around them, the true depth of a doctor’s struggle lies in the unseen, enduring scars of the soul.

I really find this art piece and the description really powerful. The contrast of colours intrigued me and upon reading the description it emphasises the impact of the colour scheme. The black and white highlights to others that Doctors are fine, however the colouring shows that Doctors tend to hide their pain and even though they perceive and show strength, no one can be strong all the time. In a way it is bring light into the issues that are meant to be “black” to signify the concealment of their struggles.
