Water Shame

Neil Kerfoot

Painting

According to WHO somewhere between 25 and 30% of our world’s population do not have access to clean running drinking water.

In the UK we flush our toilets with clean water whilst elsewhere WHO estimates 144 million people drink untreated surface water.

Every year nearly 300,00 children under 5 die due to diarrhoea linked to inadequate water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)

A world strategy exists to reach universal access to WASH by 2030 but this is currently doomed to failure.

We take fresh clean water and access to hand hygiene for granted, but should take a moment to remember the taste and health benefits of clean water is by no means universal.

My feelings of shame are the basis for this piece.
