Reflections on the Human Form
In Foundations of Medicine, we learn about different models of healthcare. We see how evolving views of the role of doctor and patient have informed quality of care and style of practice. From a micro to a macro lens, we also see the structure, form, physiology and biochemistry of the human body unfold – we apply scientific knowledge and different socio-behavioral perspectives. In our creative piece, we wanted to convey this view of the body as a number of different and varying layers and perspectives that make up the whole.
When we first met to discuss our initial ideas, we had considered line drawing, collage, layers of anatomy on perspex sheets or a video portrayal of the opposing perspectives of doctor and patient in the consultation. We experimented with all of these ideas and eventually came to the conclusion that the medium of collage allowed us to combine the efforts of all team members meaning that it represents a culmination of our individual perspectives.
We attended life drawing to gain a view of human proportion in order to be able to create an outline with suitable dimensions. We were interested in the idea of line drawing and managed to combine this style with collage by lino-printing over the collage.
The combination of media, ideas and scales, with a number of us working together at one time on the piece makes it a true representation of the cumulative perspectives we have gained as a team from Foundations of Medicine.
