I was inspired by Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’- I have had a poster of it on my wall for years. My approach to art is, in many ways, rather fanciful; I’ve never been very good at (or had much patience with) ‘draw what you see’. I love experimenting with odd, vibrant colours and this piece was particularly challenging as I had previously shied away from using oil pastels. The result is this swirling, brightly coloured and slightly bizarre ocean landscape, but then that’s the great thing about art for me – it needn’t be a true representation of reality in order to be appreciated and enjoyed.
