My Life
My life feels like many layers
First a very busy,
Colourful life with
The thread of life
Connecting throughout.
Go deeper, it’s like
A smooth river
And all that is precious to me
Followed by a layer of colour,
Of confusion, yet
If you look deep
There is a pattern and order.
All the layers cover my heart
And a pulse of directions and
Love and commitments
Runs through it.
Yet some layers bring tears,
Some laughter, and
Some pain and hurt.
Never underestimate
The power of the heart.
It’s beat sends out healing and life,
Love and joy,
A muscle that needs exercise
And that is life itself.
Following the informal sharing of Susi’s artwork, techniques, collection of vintage and contemporary textiles, the group were invited to then respond experimentally to a range of sensory fabrics, threads and wools.
Susi reflects:
“There is currently a strong strand running through my practice about making visible, in a creative form, connections, memories, identities. I am seeking to capture delicate fragments of these – using textile to ‘hold’ them and stitch to ‘embroider’ them.
I treasure the sense of touch – sensory experience in our engagement with the world – the dialogue between fingertip and brain and its power to subtly release and evoke connections, memories, narratives.
Art making for me is about the play between theories in my head, fabric and thread and thinking through my hands”.
I love the way in which so many aspects of life are explored. Positive and negative emotions are described in parallel, the final line is a really clever metaphor in the way that the physical and emotions are compared. It places real importance on love and feeling and how this shouldn’t be overlooked, especially in medicine.
