Anatomical Art
I had been interested in developing a way of drawing which was relevant to medicine for some time and when I discovered that ‘Performing Medicine’ in London was running three Anatomical classes with Sarah Simblet I took up this opportunity. In the sessions I learned about the history of anatomical drawing and how artists had to be taught ‘to see’. I began to appreciate that this process is much more than mere copying. Understanding the body is obviously necessary to produce anatomical drawings and we also sketched from prosections.
I feel that the course provided me with useful tools to continue drawing in the future. After all, classes and tins of pencils are only tools – the main learning is achieved by putting what I have observed and learned into practice.
My drawings are inspired by sketches and photographs in Sarah Simblet’s book ‘Anatomy for the Artist’.
