One Small Drop

Eleanor Slorach

I came up with the idea of painting a water drop when considering complex adaptive systems in our whole person care module. A good example was all the water systems in the world. All the streams, rivers, lakes, waterfalls oceans etc. essentially exist due to the one simple rule that water finds its own level.

I found this idea itself fascinating but I needed some way of portraying an aspect of this complex adaptive system in a painting. I thought the best way would be to paint a water drop as it is a very clear example of a situation when a small change leads to significant effects. The title simply reinforces this idea.

I like the idea of a small change making such a big difference and it applies to many systems: families, communities, companies etc. I just thought this was an ideal way to show such an effect visually, and also how change is just part of nature, it isn’t necessarily a good or a bad thing, just something we adapt to.

“I work for a hospice provider and I am planning to use the theme of “A Single Life Can Make A Difference” in a recruitment campaign this year. What would I need to do to get permission to use the painting ‘One Small Drop’ as a supporting piece of artwork on recruitment posters, business cards, etc? May I have permission to use it if I site the title of the work and the artist? Thank you very much for your response.”

“I find the motif of a small ripple leading to significant effects to be a very compelling concept that is very significant both in medicine and in the real world.”
